Twelve-year old Boluwatife Tijani of Araromi Primary School, Orile-Agege has emerged the winner of the 2015 Spelling Bee competition in the primary school category going home with a cash gift of one hundred and fifty thousand naira only.
Master Boluwatife Tijani, a Primary six pupil and an indigene of Ondo State, beat nine-year old Iretiola Ifaniyi, a Primary Five pupil of Methodist Primary School, Ibeshe, Igbogbo, Ikorodu and 10-year old Jonathan Arowolu of Abesan Primary School, Mosan Okunola to the second and third positions respectively. Both went home with the sums of one hundred thousand naira and seventy five thousand naira respectively.
No fewer than 57 pupils drawn from all the twenty local government areas and thirty seven local council development areas of the state participated at the event that was held at the State Auditorium in Alausa, Ikeja.
Earlier, the Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo observed that the Competition was created in order to improve reading culture among young people as well as develop the innate skills of students in both Primary and Secondary Schools in the State.
Said she, ‘the idea of the Spelling Bee Competition was conceived in 2006 and has since been adopted by the Lagos State Ministry of Education. The Competition has since helped students and pupils to improve on their spelling skills, increased their vocabulary and developed correct English language usage.”
Soyombo opined that the Competition has also been able to fulfill the ultimate goals of creating healthy rivalry amongst the students in addition to drawing out their intellectual capabilities.
The Director General commended the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola for the sustenance of the laudable programme adding that the students can only reciprocate the gesture by excelling in their academics.
She the sponsors of the programme hoping that they would continue to partner with her Office in order to ensure the attainment of standard in the provision of education in the State.
