LAGOS STATE SCHOLARSHIP BOARD

Since promotion of quality and accessible education is one of the cardinals thrust of successive administrations of this state, hence the need to provide a means of alleviating the cost of education. Local Scholarship Award was introduced in Lagos State in 2002 to assist indigent indigenes with excellent performance in their areas of academic study.

Presently, both indigenes and non indigenes of Lagos State are enjoying Scholarship Awards under His E x c e l l e n c y ‘s S p o n s o rs h i p Programme. A lot of students have benefitted from this laudable programme and this includes students who have displayed excellent performance in their academic studies. Also, off-spring of those who died under known tragic circumstances within the state. This administration has also made provision for brilliant but physicallychallenged, indigent students and orphans who without government assistance will not be able to complete their education.

Winners of Spelling Bee Competition (One Day Governor) organized by the State Ministry of Education, as well as students with e x c e ll e n t performance at a sitting in WASSCE result are beneficiaries of this award. The Awards are in categories: the Bursary, Local and Foreign Scholarship. Bursary is for students who are Lagos State indigenes and are currently in tertiary institutions in the country. These students must be on full-time studies. However, scholarship beneficiaries must be in their second year and maintain a minimum academic grade equivalent of Second Class Upper Division. Foreign Scholarship beneficiaries’ course of study must be within the manpower needs of the State, except otherwise determined by the Governor of the State.

It is noteworthy to state here that the Foreign Scholarship is presently on hold by the State Government. Just of recent, His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State released the sum of N635,576,432.36 (Six hundred and thirty-five million, five hundred and seventy-six thousand, four hundred and thirty-two naira and thirty-six kobo) for payment to 8,419 beneficiaries (covering both bursary and scholarship awardees) for the 2016/2017 academic session. Lagos State Scholarship Board will be hosting the Federal Government Bilateral Education Agreement Progr amme , an educ a tiona l collaboration between the Federal Government and some foreign countries.

This will hold from third Monday, 19 – Friday, 23 February, 2018; at the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos. In the same vein, Lagos State Scholarship Board collaborates with AGBAMI FOUNDATION (a conglomerate of oil companies) to provide scholarship to deserving Nigerian students.
