CMS Senior Grammar School Wins Lagos Schools’ Debate

The duo of 15year-old Adetutu Adesuyi and 14year -old Marvelous Seidu of CMS Senior Grammar School, Bariga over the weekend emerged winners of the Season VI of the Lagos State Schools Debate Competition.

They defeated Mafoluku Senior Grammar School, Oshodi represented by Elizabeth Ajigbotesho and Remilekun Ojurongbe scoring 71.3 points against 70.3 scored by Mafoluku Senior Grammar School.

In the Individual Speakers’ Category, Sherifat Fagbenro of Badagry Senior Grammar School, Badagry beat six others contestants to emerged winners thereby receiving cash gift of seventy five thousand naira among other prizes.

The winners and runners up in the Schools’ Category were presented with a trophies, cheques of five hundred thousand naira and three hundred and fifty thousand naira respectively and a tablet each by the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, who was represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye.

The Governor who was impressed by the performances of the students noted that the state was already reaping the benefits of the huge investments in the education sector as exemplified by the various laurels won by students of public schools in the State at both national and international events.

He pointed out that only recently Lagos State emerged the overall winners in the 2014 National Junior Engineers, Technicians and Scientists (JETS) Competition coming first in the Inter-State Quiz Competition, first in the National Theme Project, first in Free Choice Project, first and third in Physics Competition, second in Biology Competition, third and fourth in Mathematics Competition and fifth in Agricultural Science Competition.

Fashola commended the spirit of sportsmanship shown by the Students just as he congratulated the winners while urging those who have not won to work harder as another opportunity awaits them to redouble their efforts in future competitions with a view to winning.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye who spoke through the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Omolara Erogbogbo commended the Governor for his support and efforts in sustaining the Lagos State Schools Debate as well as the Debate’s Technical Consultants, Gradients Hills.

The Lagos State Schools Debate is one of the co-curricular activities organized by the Ministry of Education to develop the intellectual capability of students as well as instil in them the confidence that will enable them speak confidently anywhere and at anytime.
